What is This Blog and Why am I Doing This Again?

This is probably the 6th time I’ve tried to start a blog. Before I get too far in, and before we see how successful this iteration is, let’s discuss what’s going on here.

I’ve worked in IT for over a decade, and have worked in a wide variety of technologies, largely in the Microsoft data stack. A consultant once told me that he had a blog, but it was largely for his own use - he would write posts for the really complex problems he was asked to solve, and then he’d know where to go searching for it when a similar issue came up in the future. I’ve heard this logic from others over the years as well, I’ve just not always been great about rebuilding those odd scenarios on my personal time to blog about.

My most recent iteration of a blog was just over a year ago, and I got started - and stopped after my first 2 posts. So here’s hoping this version goes better! This time I’m using it as a way to learn about static sites and to play with blogging without WordPress, so hopefully that helps keep me interested and playing with stuff.

What am I hoping to write about this time? Well, I work very closely with Power BI, so I intend to use that as a signficant content point. The world of Power BI is moving fast, and we all need some help keeping up! Secondly, I’m a big Minnesota Twins fan. I’ve always wanted to collect baseball-related data and build some interesting reports around that, so I’m hoping to do that here as well. In my spare time, I enjoy getting my smoker going and making some wonderful food, so I’m also hoping that I can share some of those successes here.

I’m building this from scratch, so it’ll likely be in a bit of flux for a while - so hang tight while I get everything up and running! Find me on twitter @JohnThompsonBI if you’d like to reach me!
